Home Diving Trip reports Weymouth Winter Warmer (December 2001)

Weymouth Winter Warmer (December 2001)

On Friday 14th December, four club members headed down to Weymouth for a weekend's sea diving aboard ‘Skin Deep'. This was to be the last outting of the vessel from Weymouth as shortly afterwards it was moved down the coast to its new home at Deep Blue Diving, Plymouth.

The weather had been good all week and the Saturday was more of the same. Clear blue skies and (relatively) flat seas meant that we could dive outside the harbour, so we headed for Lulworth Banks. First dive was a drift along the banks with loads of scallops, a ray, and a dogfish. The vis was fairly poor (1 metre) but that's what you expect in December!!!!

We returned to Portland Harbour for lunch and noticed dorsal fins in the water. The next hour was spent watching a pod of some 10-12 dolphins swimming around the harbour. Second dive of the day was on the Landing Craft. Loads of silt, no vis and a lot of feeling our way around!

Sunday was a bit more choppy and the sun had disappeared. We had to dive within the harbour and started on the Bottle Bank, spending 45 minutes hunting for plates, cups, bottles and bowls. The day finished with the Countess of Erne and the best dive of the weekend. The wreck hadn't been dived that day so the vis was pretty good and at a maximum depth of 12-14 metres, we could have spent most of the day there.
