Home Diving Trip reports Anglesey - May 2002

Anglesey - May 2002

Following a particularly poor start to the diving year with endless blown-out weekends we decided to try something a bit different and go north instead of south! Four of the six person group left Cardiff on the Friday night for the long drive to Anglesey. They met the remaining two members at Hotel Roberts, a pleasant patch of grass at the back of Gareth's house with ensuite shower and toilet (and the grateful use of his parents kitchen).

Saturday morning we were up and out, launching from Newborough beach and heading out to find the Kimya wreck. Our luck with boats reared its ugly head and the GPS went down making wreck location quite interesting. We went for a wall dive instead and saw an amazing amount of life, Darren even saw a cuttlefish!

The group returned to the Hotel for possibly the biggest BBQ known to man, after which they retired to the comfort of their tents.

Sunday was more optimistic as we headed for Trearddur Bay and the wreck of the Hermine. The dive was very successful and the afternoon finished with a group of assessment dives from the beaches in and around the Bay. Amanda completed her Sports Diver and Gareth his Dive Leader.

War was declared on the Kimya on the Monday and we went for low tide. On arrival at the confirmed site we saw two seagulls sat on the bows as they stuck out of the water - Wreck Located!!!!!!! The Kimya is a great dive. An intact wreck in 10 metres of water with loads of life over, under and in it.

We finished up, loaded the bus and headed back to Cardiff. Everyone had an enjoyable weekend and we learnt lots about finding wrecks, cooking BBQ's and landing ¾ tonnes worth of boat and trailer onto a soft sand beach - it can be done!
